Problems with my fuel system - can anyone help?????

Postby Guest » Sat Aug 07, 2010 11:23 am

Hi everyone,

I have just joined up here. I bought a short wheel base, automatic, diesel Pajero InterCooler 2800 in January, reconditioned from Japan. It is a 1996 model.

Within 2 months of driving it here in Tanzania the car started smoking a lot. It then started cutting out and eventually it would not start at all. My garage mechanics said that it was fuel contamination and they dropped the fuel tank, cleaned it out and the whole fuel system. Eventually they changed the injectors. All was well for 2 weeks BUT now I am back to the same problem of serious smoking, loss of power (it does not even like changing gear) and $700.00 down the drain. I go to the petrol station with the best, clean fuel so that cannot be the source of this reoccurring problem.

I see other Pajero's here in Tanzania are not suffering from the same problem.

One friend told me that this Pajero model has this reoccurring problem and that it has been acknowledged by Pajero, due to seals in the fuel pump!!!! I don't know WHAT TO BELIEVE!

Can ANYONE here help shed some light on this problem because at the moment I am just wasting money.

Many Thanks
Shaba

sounds very much like it could be the front pump seals im sure there is a how to do it guide somewhere on the site but one of the other guys should be able to point you to it .
also take a look at the top of the tank through the inspection cover in the back and make sure none of the tank fuel lines have gone rusty and pourous as that realy upsets fuel mixture and fuel flow .
also check for faulty fuel filter as some cheaper ones break up inside and even though new can block fuel flow .
but i would also give the egr valve a good clean out and also take off the intercooler and give that a flush out and then you know every thing is clean .
take it step by step and put up some posts if you need to ask any questions

Yep I concur, sound like the all too familiar problem on 2.8s, the pump seals.

Quite a common one on them mate unfortunately.
