First of all welcome to the Club. Hope you fin dit useful.

Its all down to the taste of the individual. As Dragon said, the petrols are awesome models (mine still puts a smile on my face!) and are very smooth on the road and just a scapable off-road too, even with very little modification.

However, as petrols are very 'electrical' under the bonnet, getting them wet off-road can be a problem sometimes. For offroad, I would recommend a deisel, as all they need is air and fuel to keep running basically. They provide far more torque for lowend power offroad also.

All Pajero's, as with all cars/trucks, have there down sides of known problems. The 2.8 is the better deisel, but watch out for pump seals and also check when the cam-chain was replaced.

Take your time, there are plenty of fine examples out there for that money, dont rush in and buy the first you see. :takecare:

i had a 2.5 paj before fitted with a time belt i had it for 10 years and since japan and never had any problem. now i have a 2.8 paj diesel fitted with a time chain had it 2 years no problem. and YES mitsubishi dealer would love all of us to have our belts replaced ever year by them LOL. you can pick a nice paj up for around 1,500 to 2,000 go for the 2.8 diesel manual or auto theres loads around. good luck
