Been looking round these couple of sites, and must say, could be quite useful day-to-day or if you are planning a longer trip, especially with the rough winter around the corner!

http://www.trafficengland.com/index.aspx Traffic Englad - LIVE Traffic Flow & Information, including upto-the-minute views of Motorway cameras.

http://www.highways.gov.uk/default.aspx  - full of info on all roads within the UK, including scrolling traffic news across the top of page.

Both sites offer the ability to filter down to your area or the route you are planning to take.
